The classmate I choose is Nicolette Martin, Component A group 2. She read Ode to Caltrans by Hector Tobar, Montalvo, Myths and Dreams of Home by Thomas Steinbeck, The Last Little Beach Town by Edward Humes, and Surfacing by Matt Warshaw.

What is something this classmate said about the choice that relates to any of the assignments in projects 2-3?
The Last Little Beach Town by Edward Humes reminded me of Assignment 3 "Beaches". The Author writes about Seal Beach and all the beauties with in this wonderful beach. He is very grateful that it is not invaded with corporate buildings and commercialized businesses. In assignment 3 we had to compare and contrast the different beaches Seal beach and Bodega bay. In researching each beach I found many wonderful things about each beach.

3. What is something different this classmate said about their choice that you did not realize before when you completed projects 2-3?
I didn't realized how each of these beaches are very peaceful and haven't yet been invaded by the big businesses. I am a little shocked I didn't realize this before writing assignment 3 because I feel it is such an important and beautiful thing.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?
I find this writing technique to be very helpful to me. Through reading each of Nicolette summaries it helped me form new ideas and opinions on each of the summaries. Once I read Nicolette's opinions and new understandings, It helped me realize things I might have overlooked and triggered new thoughts about each subject.

5. How has project 2-3 helped you with the readings of the textbook?
Project 2 and 3 helped me get a better understanding on each of the readings from the book because it provided background information on certain topics, it helped me relate and understand a more in depth look at each of these places, cities, etc.

1. Who is your classmate, what is the component category, what is the name of the choice?

I choose Samantha Patterson. We both did our assignment 3c on Seal Beach vs Bodega Bay

2. What is something similar this classmate said about the choice?

3. What is something different this classmate said about the choice?

Samantha and I have differing opinions on the stereotypes of Bodega bay. She stated people might not think it is as exciting as Seal Beach because its colder in weather. Also that there might be more of an older crowd there. In difference I stated that that Bodega Bay might be stereotyped as a romantic getaway rather than Seal Beach might be more of a party place.

4. How would you relate this to Freire's ideas regarding dialogue? For example, you went in thinking one idea, your classmate had a different idea. What new idea emerged from this process?

I went in thinking that these beaches are very unique in there own ways. I had my ideas on what I thought of both beaches and how visiting them had a lot to do with my opinion. In reading Samantha's blog, I found new ideas and information on both beaches. For example on our differing opinions, it expanded my ideas and views on each beach. Both of these beaches are in California so the stereotypes might be a little similar. One might think California beaches are filled with good looking people, hot sun, peaceful waves crashing, parties, and lots of activities to do. Bodega Bay might be stereotyped more are the romantic gate away and Seal Beach might be stereotyped as a party getaway.

Contains a web link to your locations. (eg you can use the tools in your blog where you paste your work; there is a little icon that looks like a link) .25 points

Contains an explanation regarding how this component (any aspect of it; eg content of videos, content of websites)

These cities relate to our study of humanities in many ways. One way is both of these cities are very different and have many diverse things about them. They are unique and hold many different cultures that leave them a like as well. In both of these cities people express themselves through clothing, culture, music or dance that relates to studying humanities. These two large cities are filled with much religious culture, that I find interesting.

Contains the following elements that will be used in upcoming projects for analytical purposes:
What are some assumptions/stereotypes you think people have of each location: 1 point

I think that Los Angeles has the stereotype of being stuck up and rude. Many people think Los Angeles and they think Hollywood. Where all the rich and famous people live, where all the women are beautiful with big boobs and blonde hair. Many people stereotype San Fransisco as being liberal and free. Where a lot is populated by gays and high class business men. Either way stereotypes of California tend to lead to "Liberal tree hugger", more toward San Fransisco then Los Angeles.
List 3 things that make each location similar: 1 point

Three things that make each location similar is diversity, the two are very large cities and they both have a large population on wealthy class people.

List 3 things that make each location so different: 1 point

Three things that make them different are the weather, the size of each city, and the population.

Assignment 2C-"Golden Gate Bridge"

The Golden Gate Bridge
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_Bridge#History
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeC1__gqxzI&feature=related
http://www.goldengatebridge.org/
http://gocalifornia.about.com/cs/sanfrancisco/a/ggbridge.htm

Contains a brief paragraph how it connects to your study of humanities. 1 point
The Golden Gate Bridge relates to our studies of humanities because it connects two cultures, leading them both to explore one another. If the public didn't have to Golden Gate Bridge, people would be able to explore new cultures and diversities. It allows us to adventure off into the bright light city and understand the beautiful cultured city.
Contains the following "analytical elements":
Observation: What did you choose? What do you see or hear or feel or think of in the choice you made? What is the subject of the work? If you chose a 'thing' what is the work made of and what techniques (colors, lines, shapes, textures)does the creator use? Be specific in your description. If you chose a place, be specific in your description of what you see or hear. Talk to your reader as though they cannot see the item but somehow must draw a painting of what you see or hear. 1 point
I choose the Golden Gate Bridge. This large orange's-red structure towers over the beautiful ocean. Connecting Marin county and San Francisco. Driving south in Marin county you will see beautiful rolling hills connecting to the bay. As you drive you will approach two tunnels that lead you toward the Bridge. As you reach the other side of the tunnel you are greeted with the most breath taking bridge imaginable. Its two large arches are so high they seem like they are endless as they reach the sky. In the distant you see San Francisco and its beautifully formed structures. You hear the sound of cars honking, birds chirping, people talking as they make there way walking across the bridge. As you enter the large mouth of the bridge you are surrounded by steel beams and metal like ropes that connect each arch. As you drive over you almost feel like you are flying across the ocean to a land unknown. As you enter the city you are surrounded by hustle bustle un-like the silent rolling hills on the other side.

Interpretation: What is your choice about? Give specific examples to support this statement in 2 sentences; do so in a way that teaches us something about your choice. Make Paulo Freire proud! .75 point
My choice is about connecting with the culture around us. This is a bridge that people travel miles and miles just to see and walk across. Its diversity is unique and simply amazing. This wonderful structure helps people explore the world. People who have lived in the city there whole lives can venture across this amazing bridge to a land of open space and new understandings. This bridge connects people who have never been to a big city and doesn't know what its like to ride a subway or have a friendly neighbor. This bridge connects people and helps them explore the road less traveled.

Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I choose The Golden Gate Bridge because of its flawless beauty and its connection with the world. I think this bridge plays many rolls in our history and our understanding with the cultures around. If it wasn't for the bridge I wouldn't be able to travel to the city and explore and understand the culture. I feel this bridge is a way of connecting one culture to another. Crossing the bridge and seeing it in person, helps you understand the hard work and dedication for those who helped build it. I believe we take for granted the beautiful surroundings were we live. I have traveled the world and to hear people talk about how they would do anything to see The Golden Gate Bridge makes me cherish and remember what wonderful culture I am from. Walking across the bride gives you a invisible type feeling that one cant get anywhere else. Its a wonderful place to go and walk across to soak up the amazing surroundings.

Questioning: What else would you like to know about this choice? When completing the question section, lead your audience into the question by stating a fact you do know, yet you still have the related question. This way, both your audience and you will have an educational experience. Example: I learned that John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath was based on his personal experience working with farm workers. I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
I know that people travel across the bridge everyday, going to work, to shop, on a vacation, or simply just for a drive but I would like to know about how many people on average travel across the bridge? How many on foot? How many by car? It would be interesting to know.

5. Using your classmates work from last week, tell us one thing you learned from 1 student. Is this one thing some common experience you share or some experience that is completely different than what you experienced? Is this one thing related to our class theoretical foundation and if so, how? Is that one thing related to historical or cultural context of this country or a different one? I learned that Jessica Bozzetto write her Assignment 2b on Getty Museum. I enjoyed her blog because I have never heard about Getty Museum before so it was interesting to learn all about it. The first thing I learn was the Museum is meant to help further ones education in arts and the ancient cultures of Rome, Greece, and Etruria. The second thing I learned was it is home to some of the worlds most famous western art the goes back to the middle ages. The last and most important thing I learned was it was located it Los Angeles. Like Jessica I have never been to this Museum but hope to maybe one day visit it in the near future!

I choose The California Academy of Sciences.
This wonderful Museum in Golden Gate park is made up of many shapes, textures, lines, and colors that you can image. Walking through the entrance of this large structure is nothing but glass windows, designed to let the viewers be reconnected with the park by having a direct sight at nature. The tall trees around these windows help one feel like they are in the forest. Roaming this beautiful Museum you will find aquariums filled with exotic colorful fish and other water creatures. The California Academy of Science is a inspiring and educating place. A place for all ages to go and detach themselves from their everyday life and explore the world around. My choice is about exploring and understanding all the diverse ways of education through live creatures and life like creatures. The world around us is a beautiful thing and this Museum has a wonderful way of helping us understand just how beautiful it is. It teaches us that the world is a precious things and we need to take care of it.
Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point
I choose The California Academy of Sciences because I believe it is very important to learn about the world around us. Although this museum hasn't upended its doors yet, I have be keeping up on its newly remodeling process. My fiance is a big science guy and has really been educating me on this amazing Museum, now I am hooked! There is so much science wrapped up in our world, I believe its important to understand how it works. I feel The California Academy of Sciences is a place that you can easily learn about the world around us; in fun activities, real wild life, and 3D orbiting planets. I find it hard to learn from a text book but easy to see it in real life. It helps visualize things by seeing it in reality, which helps understand how it really works. This Museum is fun for all age groups and will be extremely entertaining. I love the way that they teach you about the animals and how you can experience first hand what the look like, what the sound like, and what surroundings they live in. It helps you understand diverse science and wild life.

I would like to know if the characters he used in that book are fictitious or are they people he met? .5 point
I have learned that The California Academy of Sciences is going to be a incredible Museum. I hope to check it out when it opens to actually learn about the world around me first hand. I have so many questions regarding the Rain Forest like: How much of the Rain Forest is left? What can I do to help?

In reading the most of the blogs from last week I learned that a lot of people did San Francisco as their place for assignment 2a. I also did my blog on San Francisco, I believe many people have done San Francisco because the city is filled with so many diverse and cultural difference, it makes for a good topic. I leaned from Christina Ambrosini that she believe San Francisco is a place you can go and be free with out stereotypes, which I fully agree with her. http://christinarose89.blogspot.com/ .

San Francisco
As I approach San Francisco, I cross the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge. Its large arches steal my attention as they follow me down the road. I look to my left and see large skyscrapers and buildings piled on to what looks like an island. I look out to the bay and a see a historic structure called Alcatraz. An old prison that is now a historic museum. Once I pay the toll I reach the city and em towered by large clusters of homes and buildings. As I start walking around I hear people talking, music playing, cars honking and cross-walks beeping. I smell the a mix of food, garbage, perfume, and asphalt. I see crowds of people quickly walking the sidewalks, some carrying briefcases, backpacks, instruments, grocery bags, talking and yelling on their cellphones. Looking around I see bright neon lights, cars passing, stores opening and newspaper blowing in the wind. I look up to see the tiny sky peeking out from the large building tops.

San Francisco is a liberal city, where you can be who you want to be. When traveling to San Francisco, one would have to go with an open mind because there is a such diverse group of people. If you are a person who is not used to big cities, you might experience culture shock. Culture shock is a feeling of anxiety, surprise or uncertainty to operate within an entirely different cultural or social environment. Don't let this discourage you. The first time I visited, I came across culture shock myself because I am a small town girl who isn't used to a big city. I believe that is why I fell in love with it because it is something so different from what I am used to. There is a bundle of activities to see and do such as, museums, theaters, landmarks, amazing hotels and places to eat. You will find various different types of race, gender preference, cultural background, and many other diverse groups. San Francisco is so beautiful not only because of its appearance but how it makes me appreciate and understand cultural diversity and different type of human expressions.
C. Judgment: What led you to your choice? What do you think or feel about this choice? Why do you feel this way? Support your thoughts with specific observations. .5 point

As I stated above, I choose San Francisco because I feel that it is beautiful for two reasons. One, for its beautiful ambiance, the way it makes me feel when I am visiting is sort of a free feeling. Especially at night with the lights lighting up the city and the cool breeze whisking around me. Second, for the diverse culture and different human expressions that surrounds me. It really helps me absorb and appreciate diversity. I see people showing their expressions through piercings, tattoos, speech, music, hair color, clothing, and much much more. I feel that it is important to understand other cultures and learn them.

D. I have learned that San Francisco is a very diverse culture and is very popular around the world for its Golden Arches. I would like to know how it became such a diverse place? What are other people's interpretations San Francisco?

In reading Leilani Ako's blog from last week, I learned that Taylor Ford, feels that non-Californians judge us from what they see on television. I can relate to her on that statement. When I was in Europe, people would ask me where I was from and when I told them I was from California they would either be so happy and want to know more or look at me with disgust. I would ask the people who wanted to know more, how do you view California? They said sunny, warm, full of hot beaches, beautiful people and more opportunities. It was funny to me because where I live (Petaluma) the beaches weren't hot, and the weather seemed foggy then warm. For the people who frowned upon California, I believe frown upon the whole United States. Maybe for history reasons or dis-belief of our ways, I am not exactly sure, I was a little afraid to ask.

Assignment 1C

The first blog I read was Sheena Dudley's. She taking this class to fulfill one of her G.E requirements and she hopes to learn more about the study of human thoughts and creativity associated with cultural context. When I read her blog on Paulo Freire I learned more about his educational concept "Banking". I learned that he wanted the teacher to have a very close relationship with the student so they could teach each other. A teacher who learns and a learner that listens. Another thing i learned was about Paulo Freires institution. I knew about the institution that contributed to his theories of education but what I didn't know was there are many countries who maintain Freire's archives to this day. This information relates to our studies in humanities by knowing different cultural educational values and the difference between them and ours.

The second blog that I read was Rebekah Consani's. She is also taking this class to fulfill one of her G.E requirements and she is also hoping to learn more about the culture in California. When I read her blog on Paulo Freire I learned his first career was a lawyer. I also learned that Paulo Freire was arrested twice and in political exile for 15 years. This relates to our studies in humanities because it helps us understand the different laws of other cultures and their government systems.

Assignment 1B

"To speak a true word is to transform the world"
Paulo Feire 1921-1997

Paulo Freire is among the most influential educational thinkers of the later 20th century. He was born in Mejacon Brazil in 1921. He experienced first hand on poverty and hunger during the Great Depression in 1929. These tragic experiences led him to focus on educational awareness. He studied Philosophy at the Faculty of Law at Recife University. Mainly focusing on Phenomenology; the study of consciousness. Teaching Portuguese at secondary schools he met his first wife. He was appointed Director of the Department of Education and Culture of the Social Service in brazil. He was also appointed director of the Department of Cultural Extension of Recife University (Brazil). He was best known for his theories on education and the relationships between teachers and students.

He believed strongly in informal teaching in a dialogue rather than a curriculum approach. Instead of one person teaching a whole class, the class works together to create ideas and learn from one another. "Too much education, involves 'banking' - the educator making 'deposits' in the educatee". The banking theory was having the student be the empty bank account and the teacher fill the bank with money; knowledge. He also believed in Praix , this involves a practice and theory approach to teaching. Having the students exposed to theories disciplines the truth behind the matter. Practice is the act of doing something.

Paulo Freire wrote many great books from educational stand points to cultural awareness. His first book was Education as the Practice of Freedom. This is about his beliefs of education as the practice of freedom. His most famous book was Pedagogy of the Oppressed, published in Portuguese in 1968. This book examines the struggles for justice and equity within the educational system and proposes a new pedagogy.

Assignment 1a

What is your first name only (NOT last name): Andrea

Why are you taking this class and what do you hope to learn? I am taking this class because I need to fulfill a G.E. requirement. My friend told me about this class and how interesting it is. I want to learn about variety of cultures and what they represent.

How far do you live from SRJC main campus (go to google, maps to get the SPECIFIC answer; for this you type in your address and 1501 Mendocino Ave, Santa Rosa, CA to find the exact mileage. EXAMPLE: 2.6 miles from campus. The goal here is to use new tools available to us. You can always come back to edit this): I am 20.2 miles from the Santa Rosa Campus (26 minutes) and 2.8 miles from the Petaluma Campus (8 minutes)

What do you think of when you think "California"? Does this differ from what non-Californians think and if so, how? When I think California, it makes me think sun, nice weather, beaches, and very expensive! I am sure non-Californians probably think the same thing.

Have you created a blog or webpage in the past? I have never created a web page before but like some people I have Facebook and Myspace, so I am familiar with creating blogs.
